Anthropogenic inputs of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere are the primary cause of global warming. It is now clear that the Paris Agreement goal to limit the increase in global average temperature to 1.5°C cannot be achieved without active removal of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
New technologies are emerging that show promise in removing atmospheric carbon dioxide. These involve either bio-based approaches, accelerating natural inorganic reactions with rocks, or engineered chemical approaches. The carbon is then stored as terrestrial biomass or products derived from biomass, in sub-surface geological formations, the oceans or the built environment. However, carbon dioxide removal technologies are not well understood and mostly unproven at large scale. In this talk, Rachael outlines the pros and cons of a selection of technologies, and describes new work being undertaken to demonstrate the effectiveness, pros and cons of one of these technologies, Enhanced Rock Weathering, at the global scale.
