2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Society’s academic journal Area.
Although the journal has evolved considerably over the past half a century, Area’s opening remit – to stimulate debate and be an outlet for new ideas through the rapid publication of concise articles – remains central to the journal’s mission.
Initially replacing the Newsletter of the Institute of British Geographers back in 1968, Area has grown to become a key outlet for UK-based geographers publishing a variety of geographical research. The journal strives to be accessible to postgraduate students and early career academics and so awards a prize for excellent geographical research from new researchers every year.
Area continues to develop as a publication for the very best research from both within the UK and internationally with its renewed focus on collaboration, co-production and building alliances across geographical, disciplinary and identity boundaries.
