From 2020, the Peter Smith Award of £1,000 will be awarded biannually as part of our Geographical Fieldwork Grants.
Peter Smith was a long standing supporter and Trustee of the Society and since 2015 a named lecture in his memory has opened our annual Explore weekend. From next year, in recognition of Peter’s commitment to fieldwork and student learning, the Peter Smith Award will be available as part of the Geographical Fieldwork Grants. The purpose of the award will be to support the development of undergraduate geography students through field-based research, with applications from across the breadth of the discipline welcomed.
The Geographical Fieldwork Grants form the Society’s longest running grants scheme and enable upwards of 20 teams of students and researchers to get into the field every year. This year’s recipients have travelled to destinations including Siberia, Cuba, Malaysia, Madagascar and Greenland to carry out their fieldwork.
Interested in applying? The deadline for applications is 15 February 2020. Find out more.
The final Peter Smith Memorial Lecture will take place on Friday 8 November, when recipients of the 2018 Land Rover Bursary, Dr George Busby, Jason Hendry and Dr Isaac Ghinai will discuss their scientific expedition driving 7,350km across Africa to document current innovations and challenges in eliminating malaria.
