Mike Clarke, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of Southampton and past Director of the GeoData Institute, died on 11 April 2014. A Fellow of the Society, Clark received the Gill Memorial Award of the RGS in 1983. Clark read geography (1962) followed by a doctorate in geomorphology (1965) at Southampton University. His work evolved to focus on environmental management, water resources, coastal zone management and cold regions research and on the interactions between society and risk. His involvement in multi-disciplinary applied research and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to decision-making led to the co-founding of the GeoData Institute in 1984, where he served as Director for 18 years (1988-2010).
