RGS expedition and fieldwork festival and EXPLORE weekend

This year, the Society’s annual EXPLORE weekend has expanded into a week-long RGS expedition and fieldwork festival: eight days of events and workshops in-person and online which celebrate field science and travelling with purpose.

RGS expedition and fieldwork festival

The festival, which runs from 31 October to 7 November, is for those with a general interest in current and historical exploration, tales from the field, and travel with purpose.

Festival event highlights include:

  • Alice Oates asking how 'good candidates' have been recruited for polar exploration in the past and present

  • Dr Tom Matthews and team revealing what the weather station they have just installed on Everest tells us about climate change

  • Climber Leo Houlding talking about his month-long expedition to the tepuis of Guyana

  • Dr Samuel Derbyshire and Dr Isla Myers-Smith explore our changing world from Kenya to the Arctic through Society funded fieldwork

The festival culminates in EXPLORE, the Society’s long running and unmissable expedition and fieldwork planning weekend. In this unique gathering of leading field scientists and explorers, anyone planning an expedition or journey with a purpose can get inspiration, make contacts, and seek expert advice.

EXPLORE weekend

EXPLORE, which is over the weekend of 5-6 November, brings together expedition professionals, field scientists, and independent travellers with experience from all over the world, to help you get the most out of your project and learn from others recently returned from the field.

Whether you’re a student planning your first field research experience, a teacher organising an inspirational trip, a media professional heading for a challenging posting or a seasoned explorer working on ideas for your next expedition or field science project, then the EXPLORE weekend is for you.

This year, EXPLORE features workshops on:

  • Expedition planning and logistics

  • Working in remote environments

  • Specialist field research skills

  • Communicating your discoveries

To kick-off the EXPLORE weekend, a panel discussion on the Friday night asks What is there left to explore? Join the panellists to discuss what it means to be an explorer in the 21st century, along with the responsibilities and tasks facing today’s travellers, adventurers, and field scientists.
