We are delighted to announce that applications for the 2023 Wiley Digital Archive Research Fellowships are now open.
Hundreds of thousands of items from our historic Collections have been digitised as part of the Wiley Digital Archives (WDA) project. These are now available for research through the WDA platform, which allows users to make connections between materials in many different formats to build up a richer portrait of a given place, person or expedition.
The Fellowships provide successful researchers with access to the Wiley Digital Archives for six months to pursue a focused research project on a part-time basis. Applicants are encouraged to use this opportunity to pilot new projects and/or to support and enable their existing research as there is no direct financial support provided through the scheme.
This year, to recognise the centenary of the first Society-supported expedition to climb Mount Everest, we strongly encourage applications that focus on Himalayan and/or other high mountain environments however, other topics will also be considered. We are particularly interested in themes related to the environment (and subsequent environmental change), technology, the expertise and contributions of local communities, and critical assessment of the legacies of the early Everest expeditions. Projects that involve engagement with community groups and/or public outputs are particularly encouraged. Find out more about the ways the Society is marking the centenary with activities linked to Everest.
Successful applicants will be asked to keep a research diary, provide updates on their progress to the Society, and submit a short report at the end of the project. There will also be opportunities for sharing findings with wider audiences.
The deadline for applications is Monday 16 January 2023.
