We are delighted to announce that our Weddell Sea educational resources have received a Highly Commended Award from the 2020 Geographical Association (GA) Publishers’ Awards.
Our Weddell Sea educational resources were produced in conjunction with the 2019 Weddell Sea Expedition to inspire young people about the science and technology behind the expedition, as well as the protection of Antarctica. They include posters, timelines, podcasts and videos, animations and case studies on topics from the geography of the Weddell Sea and ice shelf processes in Antarctica, to life above and below the sea ice and what life is like on board a polar research ship. The resources are suitable for all Key Stages and are free to access. The award citation identified our resources as ‘an extensive and rich collection of support materials that the judges thought offered a good range of activities and a fascinating insight into the work of the expedition.’
We are continuing to build upon this work as educational partner for the Weddell Sea Expedition, with funding from the Flotilla Foundation, to further expand pupil engagement with Antarctica’s marine environment and physical geography, and the need for its protection and conservation.
The GA Publishers’ Awards recognise resources that make a significant contribution to geography in both primary and secondary schools or colleges, and encourage the creative development of new resources. Find out more about the awards.
