The Rex Walford Award is for trainees or teachers who have just started their careers.
For this year’s Rex Walford Award competition we are asking trainee or early career geography teachers to create a short scheme of work, including a range of mapping, which reveals a place where their pupils’ would like to travel to, and how and why they want to go there.
We are interested to see lesson, resources and maps which illustrate and describe:
Which human and physical features pupils identify
Why some places are especially important to pupils
A place they would like to visit and why
Any links which ‘stretch’ their submissions to other places which were also become important to them as a result of the pandemic
The Rex Walford Award is for trainees or teachers who are in an early careers stage, including students enrolled on a PGCE, SCITT or Schools Direct programme, alongside Teach First geographers, NQTs and colleagues at an early career stage.
Entrants are asked to produce a scheme of work, including at least three lessons, that explores the theme of Where, how and why. We would also be interested to see (where possible) examples of pupils’ work that has resulted from the lessons.
Reflecting the late Rex Walford’s passion for training new geography teachers who can inspire their students in their subject, the Rex Walford Award is given for the best scheme of work, set of teaching resources and/or lesson plans developed on the same theme as the Young Geographer of the Year competition. And we hope you will also encourage your pupils to take part in the accompanying YGOTY competition.
