All of us at here at the Society are deeply saddened to hear of Sir Philip Christopher Ondaatje's passing.
Born in Sri Lanka and educated in England, Sir Christopher was highly esteemed throughout his life for his varied work as a financier, explorer, writer and philanthropist.
Sir Christopher’s love of exploration, authorship and geographical discovery was reflected in his lifelong connection with the Royal Geographical Society. As a Fellow he spent time researching the great Victorian explorers Livingstone, Burton, and Speke using our Collections. His experiences retracing the steps of the latter two would inform several acclaimed books.
This relationship was solidified when he became Honorary Vice President of the Society, championing our mission to share geographical knowledge with energy and conviction. Sir Christopher was appointed CBE in 2000, and knighted in 2003 for services to museums, galleries and societies.
His dedication to storytelling was clearly demonstrated by his generous benefaction towards the refurbishment of our Ondaatje Theatre, undertaken as part of our Unlocking the Archives project. Since its reopening 20 years ago the theatre has connected enthusiastic audiences with some of the world’s most compelling speakers.
The entrance to the theatre, a place that continues to inform and inspire, is marked by a bronze bust of Sir Christopher as a reminder of his passion for geographical learning.
Sir Christopher’s extraordinary contribution to the Society’s work remains an enduring part of our history.
