David Whitehouse, who has died aged 71, was a Fellow of the Society, archaeologist and leading authority on Roman, Islamic and medieval glass.
He served for 10 years as director of the British School in Rome (1974–1984) and subsequently as director of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.
