Dr Wiesam Essa, was killed in Gaza in the first week of January 2024, when his apartment block was badly damaged by Israeli bombs. He is survived by his wife and four children.
A geographer at Al-Aqsa University in Palestine, Wiesam was a Visiting Fellow of in 2019-21, supported by the (CARA).
While at the geography department in Manchester, Wiesam was awarded a Small Research Grant by the Society as part funding to further his investigation of satellite remote sensing-based analysis of water usage in Palestine.
