Earl George Jellicoe died on 22 February at the age of 88. Elected as President of the Royal Geographical Society in June 1993, he was described by his close friend Lord Shackleton, as “the ideal person to chair the Society’s affairs”.
Awarded the DSO award at the age of 24, and a noteworthy member of the House of Lords, he was also Chancellor at the University of Southampton, and chair of the Council of King’s College London, Tate and Lyle, the Medical Research Council, the Davy Cooperation, and the British Overseas Trade Board.
He served as President of the British Heart Foundation and the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. Earl Jellicoe served as President of the Royal Geographical Society from 1993 to 1997, and played a key role in the merger between the RGS and IBG.
