Career in agriculturalmarketing
His business career had been in agricultural marketing and co-operation, having served as an executive of the UK's largest agricultural co-operative and as President of the European Marketing Board and Co-operative Organisation.
Education
His education at The West of Scotland Agricultural College laid the foundations for a lasting involvement in promoting agricultural education and in promoting agricultural development around the world.
Leadership roles
He became a trustee of The Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth and a supporter of many agricultural charities.
He served with distinction as Master of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen and as Director of Development at The Royal (Dick) Veterinary College in Edinburgh.
