Geo: Geography and Environment relaunch
The Society’s open access journal Geo: Geography and Environment has recently been relaunched, setting out a renewed and refined scope for the journal which aligns it more closely with issues of climate, environment and sustainability.
The relaunch has been driven by Geo’s new editorial team, Dr Karen Bickerstaff (University of Exeter), Dr Christopher Darvill (University of Manchester), Dr Laurie Parsons (Royal Holloway, University of London) and Dr Le Yu (Tsinghua University), with their full vision for the journal set out in an editorial published earlier this year.
Geo themes
Geo is establishing ‘Geo themes’ – groupings of papers in specific topic areas led by leading scholars. The themes are open for all to submit to and will be presented as ongoing collections on the Geo website. The first three themes announced are: Decolonising climate geography, led by Farhana Sultana, Kathryn Yusoff and Miriam Gay-Antaki; Climate change, AI and sustainability, led by Mark Maslin, James Dyke, Eric Nost, Ruth Machen, Jenny Goldstein and Luis Alvarez León; and Geographies of energy futures, led by Catherine Butler, Peter Forman and Ankit Kumar. Further themes will be announced in due course.
Geo at AC2023
Geo will be running two sessions at this year’s Annual International Conference, which will be held at the Society from 30 August to 1 September. The first session will be a relaunch event at 1.15pm on Wednesday 30 August. This session will introduce the journal’s scope and ‘Geo themes’, and open up conversations with prospective authors and theme leaders. The second Geo session, focusing on decarbonising fieldwork, will be held on Thursday 31 August from 1.10pm-1.50pm and will feature a panel discussion between Dr Stewart Barr, Dr Karen Bickerstaff, Dr Angharad Closs Stephens and Dr Kevin Lougheed.
Geo receives its first Impact Factor
We are also delighted to announce that Geo has been awarded an Impact Factor – measured as the yearly average number of citations of articles published in the journal in the last two years – by Clarivate for the first time since it was founded in 2014. The Impact Factor score awarded to Geo was 2.2, which ranks Geo at 70/167 in the geography listings and gives the journal a strong base to build on following its relaunch.
