Professor Peter Fookes was a renowned engineering geologist. Through his worldwide consulting practice, he brought his expertise as a civil engineer to prestigious projects in over 90 countries, including the Thames Barrier, the Channel Tunnel and the Great Man-Made River Project.
Fellowship
Peter was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society in 2003. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Geological Society and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Peter held degrees from Queen Mary College, where he initiated the MSc course in Geomaterials, and Imperial College London, where he also taught and helped to develop the MSc course in engineering geology. Peter gained his PhD white working on the Siwalik Clays in Pakistan.
Academia and career
Peter's contribution to the field he helped create was recognised by four visiting professorships and his role as a Distinguished Research Associate at Oxford University. He was the author of over 130 papers and books.
