The marine biologist Peter Meadows, was enthusiastic in his teaching of fieldwork, research and involvement in sustainable development and community engagement in Pakistan, for which he received awards from the Pakistan government and the UK’s Pakistani-origin community. Peter taught at the University of Glasgow for over 30 years, where he was a diligent supervisor of postgraduate students, with 30 achieving PhD degrees. A dedicated academic, he published over 150 papers in refereed journals and conducted a large-scale expedition, funded by the Society and supported by the Linnean Society, to the Chitral Valley in the Hindu Kush mountains of Pakistan.
The community development and education work done by Peter and his wife Azra Tufail, was recognised through the Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam (star of the great leader Mohammad Ali Jinnah) medal, one of the highest awards that the Government of Pakistan can award to a foreigner; and to Peter and Azra jointly the UK Pakistan Society’s annual medal was awarded in 2013 for contributions to the public understanding of Pakistan in the UK.
