For nearly 200 years our Members, Fellows and friends have helped shape who we are. Today, they support us in our mission to champion and share geographical knowledge of people, places and environments – helping to drive positive change for the world we live in. Some of our supporters who share this passion have chosen to take further action and ensure this work continues to thrive for years to come by giving a gift that stretches far beyond a lifetime.

Former teacher Judith Mansell was a key member of the geographical education community, including at the Society where she was Education Officer for 11 years. Judy was integral in developing the A Level Study Days and teacher CPD programme, and further committed to supporting the next generation of geographers by pledging a £2,000 legacy gift in her will. This gift reflected her passion for geographical fieldwork. Judy sadly passed away in 2025 but her generosity funded the creation of a suite of free multi-media training materials for teachers on fieldwork pedagogy.

Presented by Chloe Searle, who worked with Judy, the materials help carry Judy’s expertise and commitment to geography into future classrooms. With a specialism in the A Level NEA, Chloe has supported hundreds of students through the assessment and is passionate about equipping teachers with the skills to create both memorable fieldwork experiences and academically successful outcomes. Judy’s gift now provides a lasting educational legacy that will support teachers and their pupils for years to come.

In 2025, 18% of our income came from donations and gifts in wills like Judy’s. These generous donations of all sizes are vital in supporting tomorrow’s geographers to better protect and understand our planet. Now more than ever, we need geographical understanding to drive positive change - your support can help us plan for the future and sustain our work
