Results published by the Joint Council for Qualifications this morning, Thursday 13 August, revealed that 34,128 students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland sat geography A Level exams this year.

This year’s total marks a slight decrease in the number of students taking geography at A Level compared to last year (34,336 in 2025).

Geography was once again the twelfth-most popular subject for students at A Level this year, demonstrating that young people remain eager to understand the political, natural and social forces that affect the world, and to benefit from geography’s utility in preparing students for careers in sectors spanning the built environment, finance, governance, clean energy and more.

The Society’s Director, Professor Joe Smith, said:

“I’d like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to every student receiving their geography A Level results today, as well as to the teachers, parents, carers and families that have supported them. We are always delighted to see that young people recognise the value of studying geography to gain a multifaceted understanding of the world’s people, places and environments.

"With the environmental, economic and humanitarian challenges facing our world, the value of geographical thinking will only grow more important in the future. I encourage these students to continue studying and using geography, whether they choose to go to university or head into the world of work.

"A geography education gives students expertise in both social and natural sciences and strengthens their employment prospects and earning potential in a broad range of sectors."

As part of its mission to support the next generation of geographers, the Society is revamping its Student Membership offer, which will be available for free to all students (GCSE to undergraduate) interested in geography, from 1 September.

Student Members can access study support and resources, community and networking events, as well as practical guidance, events and webinars on securing work experience, the university application process, and exploring geographical careers in a variety of sectors.
