Thinking Black aims to engage, equip and empower a new generation of young Black voices. Their mission is to create modern educational programmes that enable student responses to curricula that reflects Black communities.
The ACT Prize
Their flagship programme, the ACT Summer School, is a non-residential summer programme designed for Black Year 12 state-school students in London. It combines in-person lectures, workshops, mentorship and time to develop your own independent project.
Through interactive sessions and expert guidance, students build skills, explore new ideas, and create a final project piece, this is typically a written project but we are open to other mediums too e.g. a presentation, academic poster or piece of art.
Students can expect to work alongside curious, like-minded individuals while exploring themes like culture, power, and justice, across a range of subject disciplines – all through the lens of critical Black thought.
All students on this programme will receive a place on the Thinking Uni Aspire Programme.
Thinking Uni
A series of online workshops for Black state school students in Years 11–13 in collaboration with Jesus College, Oxford University.
Students will receive advice on UCAS applications, interview skills, subject choice, interview skills, exam revision, mental well-being support, and more. Students will also receive the chance to get feedback on their personal statements and meetings with current Black students from Oxford and more.
Creative Writing Programme
The Creative Writing Programme is an online summer course for Year 10 students, designed to help explore your voice through poetry, prose, or playwriting. Across the summer, students will read and discuss work by Black writers, and depending on your chosen pathway take part in writing workshops, and get expert feedback as you shape your ideas. Whether you are just starting to explore creative writing or looking to develop your skills, the programme will support you every step of the way.
Thinking Black Fellowship
Thinking Black invites Black university students to join us as research and teaching fellows. Join us for stipend-supported research projects, radical pedagogical training and workshop facilitation.
