Geographer, archaeologist and linguist Margaret Masson Hasluck settled in Albania on her own in the 1920s. She became familiar with its land and people and documented its rural life in more than 600 photographs, becoming an expert on the language, social organisation and folklore of the country. Botanist and illustrator Emilia Frances Noel visited numerous Mediterranean countries from 1893 until 1920. She recorded her experiences in travel diaries illustrated with photographs, sketches and watercolours.

The lecture will analyse the depictions of the Mediterranean area through Hasluck and Noel materials kept in the Society's Collections. We will see which elements drew their attention and how their interests were reflected in their images.
