What do geographers actually do? A student webinar

Employers love geographers, but what is it that geographers actually do?

This free event aims to support students, teachers and parents to understand what careers are available for those that choose to study geography.

Speakers on this webinar all work in the business and finance sector. They will share their own individual education and career pathway, and the ways in which geography has equipped them with a wealth of skills and knowledge relevant to their jobs today. They will discuss how studying geography has helped land them roles in business and finance, as well as share their insights as to why geographers are so employable in this sector. 

The event is aimed at teachers and students interested in pursuing geography at GCSE, A Level and/or university and contributes to Gatsby Benchmarks 4 (linking curriculum learning to careers) and 5 (encounters with employers and employees).

About the speakers

Ajoa Adu – Private Banking Analyst, Citigroup

Ajoa is a private banking analyst at Citigroup since graduating from University College London (UCL) with a Geography (BA) degree in 2024. She is passionate about geopolitics, economic geography and social mobility with a particular interest in development across Africa.

Madeleine Thompson - Sustainability & Climate Client Associate, MSCI

Madeleine works for global investment data company MSCI. Madeleine studied Geography (BA) at the University of Durham, specialising in Geopolitics. She previously worked in the House of Commons, focusing on policy analysis around the UK's Net Zero by 2050 climate target.

Ravi Abeywardana - Director of Sustainability Reporting and Assurance at ICAEW

Ravi is a Chartered Accountant (ACA) and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS).   Ravi studied geography at the University of Liverpool and champions geography for its systems-based approach to understanding complex concepts.

Soraya Kebbouche – Emerging Talent Recruiter, HSBC

Soraya is an Emerging Talent and Early Careers professional at HSBC, where she focuses on graduate recruitment and social mobility. Her work helps drive HSBC's inclusive recruitment strategies. She has a geography degree from the University of Hertfordshire.
