British Standard 8848 specifies operational requirements for those responsible for organising overseas ventures. Having an understanding of BS 8848 will better inform you about the risks and safety management procedures that good practice indicates should be in place to minimise foreseeable risks.

This webinar is open to everyone interested in complying with BS 8848, or using it to benchmark safety management practices within their organisations.

The webinar is designed specifically for those planning expeditions and field research in an overseas context. It is is aimed at organisers of overseas activities including university and academic fieldwork, gap year experiences, adventure activities, charity challenges and research expeditions.

BS 8848 is nationally recognised as an important way in which organisers can demonstrate that they have good safety practices in place when offering to provide any venture outside the UK.

Pre-course requirements

It is strongly recommended that all attending the workshop become acquainted with BS 8848:2014. Copies of the standard are available to purchase as a PDF download from BSI. You may also be able to view a copy at your local public or university library.

Other relevant courses

Professional expedition leaders, teachers, lecturers, and youth workers who are seeking to develop their knowledge and skills in safety management are advised to take a two-day Off-Site Safety Management course.

Meet your trainers

Peter Harvey is the chair of BSI’s committee overseeing the development BS 8848 co-chairs the an ISO for Adventure Tourism. He has been involved in the outdoor Industry since 1991 working both in the commercial and volunteer sector.

Shane Winser is the Society’s Expeditions Advisor. She sits on BSI’s technical panel for BS 8848, the British Standard that specifies operational requirements for organisers of a wide variety of overseas ventures.
