River landscapes is a core topic at KS3, GCSE and A Level, and there’s a range of careers available to geographers who are interested and passionate about this topic.

We’re talking to professionals who have careers working to help manage flood risk and protect the river landscape. Speakers will share their career journey, educational background and the steps they took to get to where they are today.

We hope this event will increase awareness of the career paths available to young geographers, and showcase how the geography taught in the classroom has real-world impact.

This event is appropriate to all secondary school students who study rivers as part of KS3, GCSE and A Level geography. The event contributes to Gatsby Benchmarks 4 (linking curriculum learning to careers) and 5 (encounters with employers and employees).

About the speakers

Frankie Brown graduated from Cardiff University in 2024 with a degree in Environmental Geography (BSc), with a professional placement year. Frankie’s passion for geography allows her to turn environmental understanding into practical, real world solutions for communities and the built environment.

Esme Callander has worked as a hydrologist at JBA Consulting since graduating from the University of St Andrews with a BSc in Geography in 2023. Her role involves analysing water systems; primarily rivers and rainfall, and creating flood models which analyse flood risk across an area; 'I love that geography encourages you to step outside and take a look at the world around you!'

Kira Khangura has been studying Geography at the University of Manchester since 2023 and has recently completed a year in industry working in flood risk analysis at JBA consulting. Kira is passionate about geography due to its ability to solve environmental challenges through considering whole systems rather than individual parts.

Antonia MacDonald works at the Environment Agency in Flood Hydrology, applying geographical understanding of catchments, river processes, and spatial data to assess and manage flood risk.
