This session is aimed at teachers who would like to improve their understanding of how glaciers work, how they shape landscapes, and how they are an integral part of the Earth’s climate system.
There will be some coverage of first principles for those less familiar with the topic, as well as contemporary examples and new research for those who are confident with the material but are looking to bring their knowledge up to date. There will also be a focus on ways of teaching various aspects of glaciation.
The first part will be on glacial geomorphology, looking at various processes and how they lead to different glacial and fluvioglacial landform assemblages. Place examples will be drawn from the UK and elsewhere.
The second part will cover how glaciers both influence and respond to climate on different timescales and will survey the current state of the world’s glaciers.
