In the last few years we have seen an intensification of nationalist, authoritarian and fascist politics worldwide.
From Trump's war against 'woke', the violent suppression of Palestine solidarity movements in Europe, the electoral surge of far-right political parties, to the increasing violence against the most marginalised sections of the society, the current moment feels like an unwinnable battle fought on multiple fronts – not to mention the 'crisis' of higher education institutions under the neoliberal project, exacerbated by a rhetoric that casts critical thinking as a social evil and seeks to hollow universities out to its bare bones.
As academics, students, and researchers, this is a crucial conjuncture: how might we contend with and limit the resurgence of fascisms, how do we defend our knowledge and institutions from persistent attacks from all directions, and how do we build solidarities within and beyond our institutions?
Continuing the discussion on authoritarian turn and political geographies, the third iteration of our webinar series shifts focus on the future: how can (political) geographers imagine and realise anti-fascist futures.
In this webinar, we invite panelists and attendees to think about anti-fascist potentialities within the discipline of political geography, the possibilities of embedding anti-fascist sensibilities within political geography research and teaching, and strategies to practice anti-fascism(s) in, through and beyond higher education.
The discussion, we hope, encourages people to think about the role and responsibilities of political geography in the current context, build solidarities, and create spaces for collective thought and action.
