
Participation Bursary
Apply for the RGS Explore Weekend Participation Bursary, supporting eligible students and early‑career explorers with event entry, travel, accommodation, and membership.
The RGS Explore Weekend Participation Bursary is designed to lower access barriers to the benefits of the in-person experience, supporting eligible individuals and teams with expeditionary aims that align with the Society’s mission to advance geographical knowledge.
We welcome applications from people following non‑traditional, interrupted, or independent educational and career pathways.
What the bursary covers
- Full weekend ticket cost
- Travel costs reimbursed up to a maximum of £200
- Dormitory-style accommodation shared with other bursary recipients (Friday/Saturday nights)
- One year’s introductory Associate Fellow or Student membership of the Society (as applicable)
Eligibility criteria (all must apply)
- Aged 18+ and currently studying (full‑time or part‑time) or early career (within three years of graduation or at an equivalent stage of development)
- First time attendance of the RGS Explore Weekend
- Based in regions where limited affordable transport poses a barrier
- Demonstrable financial need
- Developing an overseas expedition or field research project
- Able to attend the full weekend (Friday lunchtime–Sunday evening)
How applications are assessed
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and assessed against:
- Demonstrated financial need
- Alignment of the proposed project or idea with the Society’s mission
- The value of RGS Explore Weekend attendance to the applicant’s academic, professional, community‑based, personal, or skills‑based development.
Submission of an application does not guarantee an award.
