Julia Rowlandson is a filmmaker and ocean accessibility advocate with a background in political science and geography. She is a Journey in Audio recipient at the Royal Geographical Society and a 2026 Ocean Culture Storytelling grantee.
Her Journey in Audio sound piece is called Sea of Senses and will be showcased during the Explore event. The project grew from her MSc dissertation research at the University of Edinburgh on access to blue spaces and inclusive design, exploring the lived experiences of people living with visual impairments and their relationship to coastal environments. She took part in the SailBritain Art and Science residency 'Resonant Ecologies' in the Inner Hebrides, where she reflected on blue health recording underwater and coastal soundscapes.
She aims to raise awareness about access to nature for health and wellbeing through a short documentary, currently in post-production. It is commissioned by Screen Scotland, with additional funding from Ocean Culture and supports the Scottish Wildlife Trust and British Sub-Aqua Club Snorkelling for all programme.
