Rob Litherland is an expedition kayaker and river guide who has spent most of the past 20 years working on and exploring the rivers of the world. He has a particular fascination with the rivers that flow off the Tibetan Plateau, having kayaked first descents in China and India; and was once caught in a blizzard trying to hike into the upper gorges of the Humla Karnali in Western Nepal. Away from the Himalayas, Rob has kayaked extensively in South America and British Columbia, including descents of the Abismo Canyon of the Apurimac and the Grand Canyon of the Stikine.
He has worked as a swift-water and flood rescue instructor, and instructor trainer for Rescue3 Europe, for over 15 years, delivering specialist training to emergency service teams, professional river guides, film crews, and scientists, helping them to operate safely in challenging river environments.
On his travels, Rob has been troubled by the number of rivers he has seen disappear behind dam walls. He is passionate about river conservation, and the role of journeys and exploration in demonstrating how vital free flowing rivers are for a healthy planet.
