Sarah Hannis is a freelance illustrator who turns science and nature research into publicly understandable visual stories. Her illustrations combine hand-printed textures with vibrant watercolour and ink drawings. She loves exploring the outdoors and recording what she sees in sketchbooks en plein air along the way.

Sarah’s work encapsulates everything from brief ‘snapshot’ sketches to intricate journal observations of people, plants and wildlife, spotlighting all the tiny interactions of the fascinating interconnected lives around us. Her current focus is recording the passage of the seasons by returning to draw the same local scenes throughout the year; documenting them through time in a nature journal.

“There is still so much to discover on my own doorstep, I don’t think I’ll ever run out of things to draw.”

Sarah has been the ‘unofficial’ artist on expeditions to Baffin Island (Nunavut) in 1998, Oman (2001) and Foula, Shetland (2002), illustrating the ambience and anecdotes, now long forgotten. Sarah was a geologist for 20 years, involved in fieldwork from Nottingham to Norway, and brings this background and knowledge into her work. She studied at the Royal School of Mines around the corner from RGS. She lives in Llantwit Major, South Wales, UK.
