Sophia Scott is documentary filmmaker working at the intersection of conflict and the climate crisis. Her work has taken her across Africa and the Middle East to the disappearing sea ice of the Arctic.
Sophia moved to Nairobi in her early twenties, working as a self-shooting director and producer for BBC, Human Rights Watch and the United Nations, among others. Her work took her into challenging environments, including Northern Nigeria and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where she witnessed the human cost of conflict first-hand.
In 2011, she co-founded GroundTruth Productions with her sister Georgia, making films with impact at their heart. Their feature documentaries include In the Shadow of War, Lost in Lebanon and Tomorrow’s Freedom, reaching audiences and policymakers around the world.
In 2020, Sophia led an all-female sailing expedition from Iceland to Greenland, exploring passages made newly accessible by retreating sea ice. The resulting film was broadcasted by Channel 4 News and premiered at COP26’s. The expedition led to her current feature documentary, Before It’s Gone, following polar explorer and scientist Felicity Aston as she investigates what Arctic sea ice reveals about airborne micro plastic pollution.
Sophia also co-founded GroundTruth Global with her sisters Georgia and Nina, creating expedition and travel equipment from recycled and lower-impact materials.
Whether in a conflict zone or the polar regions, Sophia believes that stories told honestly can help people see beyond the headlines, connect with lives beyond their own and find a reason to act.
