Tamsin Murchie FRGS is a geographer who has promoted the teaching and learning of geography in primary schools across the UK and the Middle East for more than three decades. Until recently, she held a longstanding position at British School Muscat as subject leader for primary humanities. In 2026, she transitioned to independent consulting, working on bespoke geography projects, including resource development, youth action linked to expeditions, and fieldwork opportunities.
Past projects have included leading Phase 1 of the Discovering Oman project, in which groups of teachers from the UK and Oman collaborated with young geographers, Omanis and expatriates to produce a series of resources supporting school curricula for students aged 9 to 13. She also consulted on the resources produced by the RGS for the Jewel of Arabia expedition and facilitated the participation of young geographers in the expedition, enabling them to learn in the ‘real world’ of exploration.
Tamsin is currently coordinating the Ocean World 27 project, which supports the aims of the Oman3165 expedition to inspire the next generation of ocean caretakers. The project empowers young people in Oman, both Omani and expatriate, to advocate for the seas and oceans. It is fully inclusive and seeks to remove barriers relating to language and ability. The project will culminate in a performance featuring 500 young people singing about the oceans, supported by an exhibition showcasing their knowledge, creativity and projects. Created by young people for young people and supported by learning from the Oman 3165 expedition and expertise within the marine industry, education and conservation, the exhibition will form part of Oman Sustainability Week 2027.
Tamsin has led continuing professional development (CPD) as well as organised and spoken at conferences in the UAE, Oman and the UK. Her published work for the Geographical Association has explored Oman as a case study for primary school geography and discussed the concept of the geography of happiness. She currently splits her time between homes in Oman and the UK.
