Conferencing the International
A Cultural and Historical Geography of the Origins of Internationalism, 1919-39

Conferencing the International was a major five-year AHRC funded project (2015-2020). with the University of Nottingham partnering with the Society. The project was led by Professor Stephen Legg, Professor Mike Heffernan, Dr Jake Hodder and Dr Benjamin J. Thorpe from the School of Geography, University of Nottingham.
It examined liberal, imperial and radical forms of internationalism as manifested in their conferencing spaces between the wars. Drawing from archives across three continents, the project reconstructed the local, national and global geographies of three important groups of interwar conferences:

The Round Table Conferences

The Pan-African Congresses

The International Studies conferences organised by the League of Nations' International Committee of Intellectual Cooperation (ICIC)
The project culminated in an exhibition at the Society from 17 December 2018 - 22 January 2019, on the Spaces of Internationalism, and a conference at the Society on 'Conferencing the International', 18-19 December 2018. An edited collection, Placing Internationalism, has now been published.
