Biography

Dr Doug Specht is Head of the School of Media and Communication at the University of Westminster, and a Reader in Cultural Geography and Communication. His work sits at the intersection of geography, media, and social justice, built on the conviction that publics can only be free if they are informed, and informed only if knowledge production is just. Examining how knowledge is created, codified, and contested through cartographic and digital artefacts, and drawing on fieldwork in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, he advances environmental justice, human rights, and educational equity, asking whose knowledge counts and who holds the power to contest it. He is editor of Mapping Crisis and the Routledge Handbook of Geospatial Technology and Society, and a columnist for Geographical. He reviews predictive humanitarian models for UN OCHA and chairs the UN HESI working group on AI in university management, bridging scholarship with practical change.
