Dr Ian Selmes CGeog (Teacher)

Biography

Ian is a retired geography teacher, teacher trainer, author and university education lecturer. He worked in secondary schools in England and Scotland and then as geography and humanities lecturer on PGCE courses at Leicester and Buckingham Universities, having been a PGCE co-ordinator in schools and for 10 years a team inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate. His PhD educational research studied how teacher practices affect student learning. He has published more than 30 education and geography books, textbooks and articles; was a schools’ longstanding school Governor and a Chair of Governors; is an editorial board member for the GA’s Teaching Geography and an assessor for the RGS of CGeog (teacher) applications as well as a PhD mentor for RGS. In 2001 he was awarded the RGS’ Ordnance Survey Award for significant contributions to secondary education. In retirement he travels, volunteers in conservation, competes internationally for British Triathlon’s GB Duathlon age-group team and has completed a PgDip in Sustainable Mountain Development. Having moved back to Scotland he is also an RSGS member, on their Education Committee, designs their GeoQuizzical monthly online quiz and leads their ongoing research programme about who studies geography and why in Scottish secondary and tertiary education called The Geography of Geographical Education in Scotland.
