Biography
Peter Downs has 35 years’ experience of research, teaching and consulting in fluvial geomorphology and sustainable river management. His career has combined academic appointments (Nottingham, Plymouth, Santa Barbara) with periods as a geomorphology consultant (UK and USA). His focus is on better understanding how human activities impact the dynamics of river environments and using this knowledge to guide sustainable approaches to river management and restoration. He became a chartered geomorphologist (CGeog (Geomorph)) in 2005 and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2019. He was previously Honorary Secretary for the British Society for Geomorphology, served on Defra’s South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, and is an Honorary Professor in Geography at Queen Mary University of London.
