Dr Stephen Swabey CGeog (Geomorph)

Biography

Dr Swabey is a geomorphologist and hydrologist resident in Napier, New Zealand. He specialises in karst geomorphology and hydrology, Quaternary science, fluvial geomorphology and coastal geomorphology. Dr Swabey's first degree in Geography is from the University of Oxford and his PhD concerns the rates of Late Glacial palaeoclimate change as reconstructed from stalagmite geochemistry in NW Europe. Dr Swabey has taught various physical geography courses at the University of Tasmania (Launceston) and the University of Auckland; worked as Manager, Natural Hazards for the Otago Regional Council, NZ, led the NZ Government's climate change adaptation and natural hazards work programmes, led a team developing software for managing enormous volumes of spatial data, and is presently Manager of the Environmental Science team at Hawke's Bay Regional Council. Dr Swabey has wide experience in practical geomorphology, hydrology, geochemistry, sedimentology, climate change and hydrogeology. His expertise also includes policy development, operational flood risk management and strategic plan development at regional and national government levels.
