Biography

Ian Coady is Deputy Director for Enterprise and Engagement at WorldPop, an applied research group at the University of Southampton specialising in geospatial data and earth observation applied to modelled demographic data. He joined WorldPop in 2023, bringing over 20 years of experience using geospatial data to ensure the world's most vulnerable populations are counted and represented in decision-making. Before WorldPop, he spent five years as Geospatial Adviser at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, part of a 15-year career in the UK Civil Service, during which he also supported the integration of geospatial data and statistics at the Office for National Statistics, contributing to statistical guidance for the EC INSPIRE Directive, the UN Global Statistical Geospatial Framework, and the UK's 2011 census geographies. From 2014 to 2016 he served as Director of the Association for Geographic Information. For the past ten years, Ian has also volunteered as a humanitarian mapper for the charity MapAction.
