Biography
I have a long academic career in research and teaching, and have authored >150 publications. My specialism is fluvial geomorphology. Research focuses on environmental change, contemporary and historical river channel dynamics, erosion and deposition processes, morphological change, meander movement, flood impacts, interaction of fluvial processes with vegetation, and catchment sediment connectivity. My research entails field measurements, historical sources and remote sensing, in both humid and dryland environments; long-term monitoring is ongoing in NW England and SE Spain. Dryland work concerns desertification processes and combating land degradation. Consultancy projects in management of rivers, catchments and coasts involve applying sustainable management strategies using 'working with nature'. Specialist equipment used includes differential GPS, total station, ADCP, drones and digital photogrammetry. Highlights of my career include BSG Chair (2000-1) and award of the 2009 RGS Busk Medal for” Field research in river systems and their conservation.” I serve on national committees of Natural England, River Restoration Centre, EA/Defra R&D Themes, and am a trustee of Mersey Rivers Trust.
