Professor Julian Orford CGeog (Rtd)
Biography
Julian is Professor Emeritus and former head of Geography at Queen’s University Belfast. Julian’s research interests concentrated on the dynamics and development of coastal gravel beaches and barriers in Britain and eastern Canada, with respect to sea-level changes, sediment supply and extreme events. This focus has moved in recent decades to a wide range of coastal morphology (barriers, dunes and marshes) with respect to sea-level change as well as to increased storminess related to climatic change. In the last decade he has been examining Holocene sedimentation in the deltaic tidal islands of the Sundarbans (Ganges Delta) with an emphasis on mud sedimentation. Recent consultancy has dealt with the future evolution of southern and eastern UK coastal gravel barriers.
