
Social and Cultural Geography Research Group committee vacancies
Committee positions for the Geographies of Children, Youth and Families (GCYFRG) will be available around the time of our AGM in September.
Please do consider getting involved in the GCYFRG, or encouraging others to do so: without volunteers filling these roles, the Research Group cannot function effectively. There are roles available to suit people of varying career stages, so please do consider them.

Chair (three-year post)
- Offer strategic oversight and leadership for the committee activities and the group;
- Responsibility across the portfolio of activities to ensure the group is working in line with the RGS constitution;
- Chairing the AGM and working with the Research Group Secretary to produce meeting agendas, agree minutes and communicate effectively with the RGS, GCYFRG committee, and membership;
- Contribute to the Annual Report and other central RGS processes as required, including coordinating Research Group nominations to RGS calls, i.e. REF panel nominations, Medals and awards;
- Chair committee meetings throughout the year, typically two per semester;
- Ensuring the Research Group complies with GDPR regulations as advised by the RGS;
- Attending Research Group committee meetings and other events (two-three times per year);
- Promote the activities of the research group widely;
- To offer support and direction for members of the committee and those who are affiliated to our group;
- The Chair must be a current RGS Fellow.
Treasurer (three-year post)
- Handle routine financial transactions of the research group;
- Oversee the technicalities of maintaining the group’s bank account;
- Produce annual statements and other finance-related documents for the RGS;
- Assist other committee members with the planning of events and initiatives;
- Contribute to other research group activities as relevant;
- As required, represent GCYFRG at RGS meetings, e.g. annual Research Group; Forum, twice-annual Research Group Sub-Committee;
- Attending committee meetings, typically two per semester;
- Support with wider research group initiatives (such as marking an undergraduate dissertation as part of our annual prize);
- The Treasurer must be a current RGS Fellow.
Conference Officer (three-year post)
- Coordinate Research Group sponsored sessions at the Annual International Conference and act as a central point of contact with the conference organisers;
- Coordinate Guest Pass applications for the RGS process;
- Provide support to the Events Officer role where necessary;
- Support with wider research group initiatives (such as marking an undergraduate dissertation as part of our annual prize);
- Attend committee meetings, typically two per semester.
Postgraduate Officer (one-year post)
- Promote postgraduate interests and the needs of the wider Research Group;
- Lead the Researcher in the Spotlight initiative;
- Develop and implement new initiatives which serve the needs of the PG community within the remit of the Group;
- Maintain connections with the wider postgraduate community through the Postgraduate Forum and potential blog posts;
- Advocate for the wider postgraduate community;
- Support with wider research group initiatives (such as marking an undergraduate dissertation as part of our annual prize);
- Attend committee meetings, typically two per semester.
Ordinary Committee Member (three-year post)
- General support to office bearers;
- Promote/champion the role of GCYFRG in wider academy/geographical circles;
- Appraise one undergraduate dissertation for the annual GCYFRG prize;
- Support with wider research group initiatives (such as marking an undergraduate dissertation as part of our annual prize);
- Attend committee meetings, typically two per semester.
