Working between Anglophone and Latin American geographies

There are significant inequalities within academic knowledge production between different countries and languages, defining who can access knowledge and enjoy the status that writing in certain languages affords. These inequalities tend to map onto the global North and South, but also exist between and within countries at smaller scales.

In particular, the hegemonic status of English in global academia imposes limits on whose knowledge and worldviews get to be read. These authors of these guides take this to be a problem.

These guides provide a set of practical resources for researchers working between Anglophone and Latin American geographies, providing an overview of the publishing landscapes in both and offering information and advice for Latin American scholars who would like to publish their work in English. They are intended to help scholars break out of regional, disciplinary and linguistic siloes and encourage publishers and journal editors to facilitate exchanges across borders.

They were written by a collective from the Latin American Geographies Research Group of the RGS-IBG in 2026: Mariana Arzeno, Mónica Farias, John C. Finn, Sam Halvorsen, Juliana Nunes Rodrigues, Lucas Palladino, Matthew A. Richmond, Ann Varley and Alejandro de Coss Corzo.
