IBG Special Publications was a precursor to the RGS-IBG book series and was published between 1968 and 1997.

According to a paper of the Society's Working Party on Publications written in 1996, "Special Publications provides a forum for scholarly monographs and edited collections of academic papers at the leading edge of geographical research. The published volumes are intended to make a significant contribution to the fields in which they lie, and to be written in a manner accessible to the wider community of academic geographers."

A total of 32 books were published in this series: 10 by the IBG itself; seven by Academic Press under an arrangement that had been put in place by an earlier editor, David Stoddart (Cambridge); and 15 by Blackwell.

Full details of the Special Publications can be found here.
