2022 competition

A joint competition run by the Society and the Financial Times.

The 2022 competition, organised in partnership with the Financial Times, asked students to explore and explain the environmental costs of current consumer trends, behaviours and purchasing decisions.

The competition was open to all A Level geography students (or equivalent) aged 16-18, and the judges were looking for clear essays or ArcGIS StoryMaps which were well-evidenced and reached a clear conclusion.  We were delighted with the high standard of the entries received and we congratulate everyone who entered.

Overall winner

  • Pip Booth, Gordonstoun School

Pip received a £50 Amazon voucher and their essay has been published at and in Routes Journal.

You can find further information about sustainability and environmental issues using the Society's and FT for Schools online resources:

The Society runs this competition in partnership with the Financial Times as part of its education programme to support geography teachers and their pupils. The competition was open to all schools and advertised through our wide networks. Submissions were judged without seeing the entrants’ names or school details using a coding system. An administrator who had not been involved in the judging decoded the list, using the separately-submitted details, after judging was complete.

Your school can become a School Member of the Society, and you and your pupils can join respectively as a Fellow or Student Member.
