About the World Register of Field Centres

The World Register of Field Centres identifies sites for environmental research, anywhere in the world. It provides information on established field centres, in environments from the high Arctic to the Sahara desert, from tropical forests to the great grasslands of the world, to enable users to find the right centres and contact the right individuals.

The register is maintained by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) and was developed with funds from Professor Keith Miller of Sheffield University in recognition of the importance of long-term field observations.

What type of field centres are listed?

There are currently over 700 field centres listed.

The centres range from small independent field camps to large long-term international facilities. The only criterion for inclusion in the register is that centres welcome international visitors who wish to undertake fieldwork at the centre, whether scientists, students, teachers, school pupils or others.
