The Society has recently approved the accreditation and reaccreditation of 47 undergraduate geography programmes and two master’s programmes at 11 higher education institutions across the UK.

Programme accreditation is a great way for university departments to demonstrate their good practice in teaching and learning. During the accreditation process, a review panel assesses programmes against the 2022 QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Geography. The statement defines what can be expected of a graduate in terms of the knowledge, understanding, skills and approaches they have gained through their degree programme.

Programmes at the following institutions were accredited:

  • Bangor University
  • Cardiff University
  • Lancaster University
  • Liverpool John Moores University
  • Swansea University
  • University of Edinburgh
  • University of Hertfordshire
  • University of Portsmouth
  • University of Reading
  • University of Salford
  • University of Winchester

Professor Rob Francis, Chair of the Accreditiation Review Panel said: “It is fantastic that another group of geography programmes have been accredited by the Society. One of the great things about reviewing applications is learning about the great initiatives taking place in geography departments across the country. Many are carrying out important work around decolonising and diversifying their curriculum and making programmes more sustainable.”

Through our accreditation scheme, we aim to support continuous quality improvement of geography degree programmes and promote good student outcomes across the sector.
