The Society is pleased to share it has chosen Romain Loubeyre’s The Glacial Snail as the 2026 membership card image.

Each year we seek an inspiring photograph which encapsulates a different application of geographical thinking. The image for 2026 represents an enduring connection to an extraordinary place for the photographer.

Romain’s image shows us a vessel from above as it carves surprising shapes while navigating the silt deposited in Scoresby Sund, Greenland, by the glacial rivers from the nearby ice cap. The full series of photographs, taken in August 2024, capture the rugged beauty and raw power of the largest fjord system on Earth.

Over the past 15 years, Romain has combined his career as a satellite underwriter with his love for photography, focusing on capturing the concept of "sense of place" — the subjective perceptions and emotional connections people have to their environments. This focus has led him to travel widely, documenting landscapes and people along the way.

Since his first trip to Greenland Romain has frequently returned in pilgrimage to one of the most otherworldly and awe-inspiring places on Earth. For him, the vast landscapes and near-total isolation of this region embody the essence of adventure.

Fellows and Members will receive this new card when they renew their membership throughout 2026.
