UK universities are currently facing a significant financial crisis, with over 40% of institutions experiencing deficits and many more likely to face similar challenges in the near future.
To better understand the impact on this on UK Geography we recently undertook a snapshot ‘State of Geography’ survey across all 76 UK higher education institutions offering geography programmes.
The survey connected with Heads of Department, Schools, and Disciplines, and provides a clear and comprehensive picture of the current pressures, priorities, and developments shaping the discipline.
The findings are presented in The State of Geography in UK Higher Education, a new report authored by Professor Jenny Pickerill, the Society’s Vice President for Research and Higher Education.
Focusing on teaching, fieldwork, staffing, and research, this offers timely insight into how geography departments are navigating an intense period of change and financial challenge across the higher education sector — and what this means for the future of the discipline.
