The Society is delighted to announce new support for the next generation of travellers and expeditioners, the Ran and Ginny Fiennes Award.
The award was announced by President of the Society, Professor Dame Jane Francis, during an event earlier this week to celebrate the legacy of the Transglobe Expedition and mark the moment at which the Society takes on the grantmaking work of the Transglobe Expedition Trust.
The Transglobe Expedition, led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, was the first expedition to achieve a longitudinal circumnavigation of the Earth using only surface transport. This remarkable journey, spanning over 52,000 miles, took place from 1979 to 1982, and remains one of the greatest feats of endurance in modern history. As well as the announcement of the new award, the tribute evening featured a panel discussion, chaired by Society Vice President Steve Jones, on the profound impact that Ran and Ginny Fiennes have had on the world of exploration, and its contribution to science.
The Transglobe Expedition Trust was established in 1993 to build on the achievements of the Transglobe Expedition by supporting humanitarian, scientific or educational projects which followed in the expedition’s tradition of adventure and perseverance. The new Ran and Ginny Fiennes Award will sustain this work.
