As part of their diverse programme of activities, the Society’s 30+ Research Groups continue to support colleagues with career development through peer-mentoring.
These schemes facilitate early-career mentees to work on particular aspects of their professional development, gaining access to support networks beyond those in their institutions.
Starting in 2023, the Geography and Education Research Group continue to run their peer-mentoring network with a focus on teaching and scholarship development, initiating 10 new partnerships in the current cycle of the scheme.
The Geographies of Children, Youth and Families Research Group are running the third round of their mentoring scheme, providing opportunities for academic mentoring as well as welcoming participants working in industry.
The Race, Culture, and Equality Working Group continue to support the Fi Wi Road Internship, now in its sixth year, providing Black-heritage Geography and Geoscience undergraduate interns with one-to-one mentoring.
Along with these established programmes, groups such as the Digital Geographies Research Group are exploring the development of pilot mentoring initiatives to support colleagues working within geographies’ sub-disciplines.
To share approaches from across the various schemes, groups have collectively created and participated in the Research Group Professional Development and Mentoring Series, meeting online to discuss challenges faced and to develop advice on good practice.
