Our Research Groups bring together active researchers and those with a professional interest in a particular aspect of geography and related disciplines. Each autumn, the groups can apply for funding from the Society to support activities over the coming year.

The Society is delighted to announce that we have awarded grants to 14 of our Research Groups to support a variety of projects and activities, enabling them to continue sharing their expertise and providing support to the wider research community.

These include an array of workshops and webinars across the groups, covering topics from food system resilience and place-based participatory systems change to geospatial foundation models and the teaching of rural geographies in the UK.

Other groups are hosting writing retreats and away-weekends, which bring members of their community together to support one another with writing and professional development.

Several groups are using their grants to support activity at the Annual Conference, including - keynote lectures and workshops, exploring how to navigate uncertainty as an early career researcher, and setting current priorities for their discipline.

"The Digital Geographies Research Group always wishes to champion our early career colleagues giving them the encouragement and financial support to engage with the wider geography community. The Royal Geographical Society's Research Grant has kindly been awarded to us to continue our work supporting early career community building and peer-to-peer dialogue around key disciplinary interests throughout the year." Dr Adam Packer, Digital Geographies Research Group

We will share updates about these, and other grant-funded activities undertaken by our Research Groups throughout 2026.
